THE former stars of ECW have finally invaded TNA and, in both real life and the current storyline, it was company president Dixie Carter who invited them. Carter ended this week's Impact with the shocking statement, just as the hardcore group were pummeling her own troops before her very eyes.
For months now TNA have been teasing a big surprise and, whether this is it or not, the arrival of extreme performers Tommy Dreamer, Raven, Rhino and Stevie Richards all seemed to be hinting that an ECW-style invasion was imminent in Orlando.
According to The Wrestling Observer, the next TNA PPV event will be an "all-ECW" show similar to WWE's memorable One Night Stand in 2005 and largely put together by Dreamer. If that goes well, Paul Heyman's former charges could become regular fixtures on the roster — even if Heyman himself can't be convinced to join.
The moment people will remember as the start of it all came on this week's Impact when Dreamer's group decided to hop the guardrail and stop an angry Abyss from beating down on TNA world heavyweight champion Rob Van Dam any further. Of course, in traditional wrestling fashion, all hell then broke loose as trainers, referees and TNA roster members were subsequently laid out by the marauding group — including Mick Foley, Brother Devon and even road agents Al Snow and Simon Diamond.
The ending was easily one of the best TNA have ever produced in eight years of business, as we saw Carter grab the mic and plead for calm before swerving us all by simply saying: "Stop, I invited them."
How the WWE will feel about the ECW name, which they own, being used and acknowledged is likely to come to light soon.
But Carter's announcement and this turn of events may be the shot in the arm TNA needs to seize back the spotlight from a gloating WWE after the short-lived Monday Night War of recent months.
I'm actually quite annoyed, I mean it's all well for TNA to have washed up male superstars I remember watching when I was younger and even then waiting for the women to come on TV. But nowadays when crap like this happens it really pisses me off, I mean seriously the women can be as hard core as the men. We've seen it from Roxxi, Daffney, Kong, Hamada, ODB ect. Even Moose for a little stint if you remember. It's a shame that TNA went from having two women's matches per PPV last year to having at least one vaguely lengthy one this year. That's if we're lucky!
Seriously though I don't understand what TNA is thinking, especially if this takes even more time away from the KOs. At one stage the Knockouts were drawing the highest ratings; even if you're in management and don't like women's wrestling, you wouldn't diminish something that is a big advantage for the show. I don't see where it all went wrong! Now they're just adding more and more washed up superstars and it's becoming a WWE garbage can.
